Professor Renata Schoeman is a renowned psychiatrist, academic and mental health advocate.

She offers compassionate, evidence-based care to children, adolescents, and adults — with particular expertise in cognitive disorders (e.g. ADHD), eating disorders, mood and anxiety disorders.

My approach

Every person is unique. I follow a biopsychosocial model of care — addressing biological, psychological, and social contributors to mental health. While medication may play a role, healing also requires lifestyle change, therapy, and self-empowerment.

I partner with my patients to create individualised treatment plans and encourage active participation in their mental wellness journey. Depending on your needs, treatment may be provided on an outpatient basis or via hospital admission.

  • Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental disorders such as mood disorders (e.g. depression and bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders, cognitive disorders (e.g.concentration and memory problems, which include ADHD and dementia), psychosis, eating disorders, and substance abuse disorders.

Diagnoses are guided by internationally accepted standards such as the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and ICD (International Classification of Diseases). These help us create personalised, effective treatment plans — not to label, but to enable accurate and thorough treatment according to recognised guidelines – and ultimately to heal.

  • A psychiatrist is a qualified medical doctor with specialist training in mental health.  Psychiatrists take a holistic view — considering the complex interactions between brain, body, and environment — and are trained to prescribe medication, offer psychotherapy, and develop comprehensive care plans.

    • Clinical assessments and diagnostic evaluations of children, adolescents, and adults.

    • Second opinions

    • Expert medico legal reports

    • Cognitive disorders (e.g. ADHD and dementia)

    • Eating disorders (e.g. anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating and obesity)

    • Mood disorders (e.g. depression and bipolar mood disorder)

    • Anxiety disorders (e.g. panic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety, OCD and PTSD)

    • Psychotic disorders (e.g.schizophrenia)

    • Neuropsychiatric conditions  and fibromyalgia

Her easygoing nature made collaboration a pleasure, fostering an environment where I felt supported and empowered. I wholeheartedly recommend Prof. Renata Schoeman to anyone seeking to turn their challenges into opportunities for growth and achievement.”

  • “Prof Schoeman is absolutely incredible! From my very first appointment, she was professional, compassionate, and thorough. She quickly and accurately diagnosed my condition and got my prescription right the first time, which was such a relief after an intense period of struggle.

Her expertise and care made a massive difference during one of the toughest times in my life. I truly felt heard and supported every step of the way. I can’t thank her enough for helping me get back on track. If you’re looking for a psychiatrist who genuinely cares and knows her stuff, I can’t recommend Prof Schoeman enough!”

  • “Dr. Schoeman is truly exceptional. With her, you never feel like just another patient—she treats you as an individual. I especially appreciate her holistic approach, which empowers you to actively participate in your own healing, rather than relying solely on medication.”

  • “I have been a patient of Prof Schoeman since 2009. For me it was a journey of acceptance and extreme empathy, no matter what I shared with her. Her knowledge of medication and her incredible ability to combine certain medications so that it can work for you changed my quality of life.

For the past 13 years I referred many patients to her practice and not once did anyone give any negative feedback. I only have incredible respect and faith in her judgement and skills as a psychiatrist.”

  • “I highly recommend Prof Schoeman. I did extensive research on the type of Doctor I needed. When I came across her website and saw her published articles and the type of work she is involved in I knew I found a gem. I wasn't looking for a therapist I needed medical intervention because I knew what was going on with me. My therapist has taught me to recognize when I am the cause and when it is a defect in my brain. Because I have been on other medication before I was anxious to take medication again, I expressed to Prof and she was able to give me a tailored management plan.

What I really appreciated is her case history taking, she was able to navigate it in such a way that I was able to give her the most important information without spiraling into my deep pains. Keeping in mind that I was not there for therapy. I wanted medical intervention. I wanted someone to assess me and say - this is what is wrong, this is how we can possibly manage it medically. continue therapy. walk everyday. lets put all these together and lets see what works and what doesn't. She put me on the lowest dosage for all my medication and it has already changed my life drastically.”
